April 18, 2014 ... On the Drawing Boards: Vancouver Special Facelift

When it rains is pours! After years of hoping to renovate one, we are now working on modernizing TWO very different Vancouver Specials. We introduced our first one, The Multigenerational Vancouver Special, a few weeks ago.  And now we are ready to show off our preliminary design for the Vancouver Special Facelift.

The owners had already renovated the interior of their Vancouver Special, and were looking for a new siding design to update the exterior (hence the name).  We’ve transformed the look of the house, while still celebrating the iconic Special ‘look’, with simple colour blocking and the addition of some dramatic materials.  It’s hard to believe that we have only changed the size of one window.  Even the glass wall and door for an artist’s studio is a converted garage door opening. The remaining windows are all replacement windows in their existing openings.  This limits the impact on existing framing, interior finishing, and of course the bottom line. The clients opted for a bold material palette of corrugated steel siding, merlot-coloured powder coated steel plate siding (an ode to weathering steel), and white-washed horizontal cedar siding.

We are looking forward to getting this guy under construction, because we think the quick transformation will be quite dramatic.  Check back soon for construction photos as we get underway this summer.

If you have a Vancouver Special and would like to renovate, let us know (email) . We would love to help out!  Also, this year’s Vancouver Special Tour is coming up next weekend!  Don’t miss out!
